Owen Wilson Cuts Through My Clutter as clueless, affable "That Guy" on STP Radio ads

Rarely does a radio ad reach out and grab me. But I've been hearing ads for STP (products that augment gas or oil in your car) featuring Owen Wilson's immediately recognizable California surfer-dude voice. He goes on to describe "that guy" ... a clueless guy who doesn't have the chops to do basic maintenance on his own car, and he admits to being "that guy" and vows to reform by using STP. The ads are funny and brilliant, and they break right through by using a voice that sounds like a friend.

A Brush With A Campus Gunman Lockdown (#USF #Tampa)

Early in the afternoon I made a quick stop at the Suitcase City Target store and as I walked in I heard police sirens and distant speakers intoning "STAY INSIDE! LOCK YOUR DOORS!" I went in, got my snack, paid and drove away. A few minutes later there was a bulletin on the radio that a gunman had been spotted in a parking lot at #USF (which is catty-corner from the Target Plaza). Apparently no shots have been fired, which is a blessing. Stay safe, everyone!

Why #eChirpy ? Why Not?

Why not? eChirpy.com allows you to quickly set up an account, link it to your twitter account, and post 500 character mini-blog entries on the eChirpy site, by e-mail or using popular blog APIs so that you don't need to have a Wordpress or Blogger site and you don't have to limit your thoughts to 140 characters. If you e-mail your post, your subject line becomes the title of the post and the tweet that goes out to your followers (along with a tinyurl). What could be easier?

Shed Sales - The Dickensian Spectacle of Mini-Storage Auctions

A friend who is out of work is attending "shed sales" as a means of getting by. Today another out-of-work friend and I tagged along, partly out of curiousity, partly to see if sales could be a way to make a few extra bucks in this economy. The auctioneer was doing five different locations, with 2-3 units each. A dozen grizzled veterans followed, sheds were cut open, and families' leftovers went from $5 to $300 in desultory bidding. A couch here, a wheelchair there, all in all disappointing.

#Advanta posts default rate of 56.95%. Stick a fork in 'em, they're done.

Bloomberg is reporting that Advanta's default rate just went to 56.95% in June, which is more than five times the national average of 10% for credit cards. They are charging off at 120 days instead of 180 days. About a million small business customers were cut off at the end of May, now it appears that more than half of them have defaulted after Advanta raised rates into the 30%+ range. Of course, Junk Debt Buyers will be waiting to pick up all the defaulted accounts, so lawsuits will eventuate.
